Bok Tower Gardens Engagement Photos | Vivian & Michael | Lake Wales, Florida
Engagement sessions are one of my favorite parts of the wedding experience because they give couples the opportunity to slow down during such a busy season of life. Wedding planning can quickly become a long list of appointments, emails, decisions, and travel plans, especially when a couple is planning from out of state. Vivian and Michael were living in Georgia while planning their Central Florida wedding, and during one of their trips to Florida, they made time for engagement photos at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales.
Looking back now after photographing both their engagement session and their incredible Star Wars-themed wedding, I love seeing how these images became the first chapter of their wedding story. Their wedding day had so much personality and was completely true to them, but this session gave us the chance to capture something quieter and more relaxed before the celebration arrived.
From the moment we started, Vivian and Michael were warm, easygoing, and excited to spend the evening together. They told me they felt a little awkward in front of the camera, which is something I hear from so many couples before their session. The truth is, most people are not awkward. They just have not been professionally photographed together before. Once we started walking through the gardens, talking, laughing, and letting the session unfold naturally, they settled in beautifully.
Exploring Bok Tower Gardens Together
Bok Tower Gardens is one of my favorite engagement session locations in Central Florida because every part of the property feels different. One moment you are surrounded by towering oak trees and Spanish moss, and a few minutes later you are walking through tropical greenery, quiet garden paths, tiled benches, reflection ponds, and views of the iconic Singing Tower. It gives couples so much variety without needing to drive to multiple locations.
For Vivian and Michael’s session, we explored several areas throughout the gardens, stopping whenever the light looked beautiful or a location felt right for them. Some of my favorite images came from the quieter corners of Bok Tower Gardens, not just the most recognizable spots. The giant tree ferns, shaded walkways, and peaceful benches created such a romantic backdrop while still feeling natural and relaxed.
That is one of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions here. It never feels like a couple is standing in one place posing for an hour. Instead, the session feels more like a walk through the gardens together. We explore, talk, laugh, and create photographs along the way.
A Couple Who Trusted the Process
One thing that immediately stood out to me about Vivian and Michael was how much they both valued having beautiful photographs together. Michael especially was such a good sport throughout the entire session. I hear plenty of jokes about one person being less excited for photos, but that was not the case here at all. He was fully invested and willing to do whatever we needed to do to create something beautiful.
Every time I suggested walking to another location, trying a different pose, or taking advantage of a pocket of good light, he was completely on board. That kind of attitude makes such a difference during an engagement session because it helps both people relax. Instead of worrying about the camera, they can focus on each other.
Vivian and Michael were affectionate in a way that felt easy and genuine. They laughed together, held hands as they walked through the gardens, and shared small moments that did not need much direction from me. My job was simply to guide them enough so they felt comfortable, then photograph the real connection that was already there.
Golden Hour Picnic Engagement Photos
My favorite part of Vivian and Michael’s Bok Tower Gardens engagement session was the picnic they planned for the end of the evening. It was simple, personal, and exactly the kind of detail that makes an engagement session feel unique to the couple. They brought a blanket, a basket, and a book, then settled beneath the oak trees as the sun began to lower.
The timing could not have been more perfect. Golden light started filtering through the trees, and the entire garden softened around them. These are the moments I love most because they do not feel forced. They feel like a real memory. Vivian and Michael sat together, laughed, read, and enjoyed a quiet moment in the middle of such a busy wedding planning season.
If you are planning your own engagement session, this is a great example of how personal details can make your photos feel more meaningful. It does not have to be elaborate or overly styled. A picnic, coffee from your favorite place, champagne, books, flowers, your dog, or anything that feels like you can add so much personality to your session.
Why Bok Tower Gardens Is Perfect for Engagement Photos
Bok Tower Gardens is a beautiful choice for engagement photos because it offers a mix of nature, architecture, history, and quiet garden spaces. The property is large enough to create variety, but it still feels peaceful and easy to explore. For couples who want a romantic Central Florida engagement session without the busyness of a downtown location, Bok Tower Gardens is a wonderful option.
Some of my favorite features include the winding pathways, lush landscaping, oak trees, Spanish moss, reflection areas, tiled garden details, and the Singing Tower. Depending on the season, the gardens can also have beautiful blooms and different textures throughout the property. It photographs beautifully in a timeless, natural way.
It is also a great location for couples who want their engagement session to feel a little more elevated without feeling overly formal. You can dress up, keep things casual, or do a mix of both. Vivian’s soft ivory dress and Michael’s light blue shirt worked beautifully with the greenery and warm golden light.
Everything You Should Know Before Planning a Bok Tower Gardens Engagement Session
Choose the Right Time of Day
Whenever possible, I recommend planning Bok Tower Gardens engagement photos during the last couple of hours before sunset. The light is softer, the temperatures are usually more comfortable, and the gardens tend to feel quieter as the day winds down. Vivian and Michael’s golden hour picnic photos are a perfect example of why timing matters so much.
Wear Something That Complements the Gardens
Soft, timeless colors photograph beautifully at Bok Tower Gardens. Neutrals, pastels, soft blues, earth tones, and flowing fabrics all work well with the natural greenery. I usually recommend avoiding loud patterns or neon colors because the gardens already have so much texture and color on their own.
Be Prepared to Walk
Bok Tower Gardens has a lot of beautiful areas to explore, so comfortable shoes are helpful between photo locations. Many couples bring walking shoes and change into dressier shoes once we arrive at each spot. This keeps the session comfortable while still allowing for polished portraits.
Add Something Personal
Vivian and Michael’s picnic was one of my favorite parts of their gallery because it made the session feel like them. Personal touches do not need to be complicated. The goal is not to create a staged production. The goal is to include something that helps tell your story.
Do Not Worry About Feeling Awkward
Almost every couple tells me they feel awkward in front of the camera, and almost every couple ends up relaxing much faster than they expected. You do not need to know how to pose before your session. I will guide you through the entire experience so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look.
Why I Recommend Engagement Sessions
Engagement sessions are not just about having pretty photos for save-the-dates or your wedding website. They are also a chance for us to get comfortable working together before the wedding day. You learn how I photograph, I learn what makes you laugh, and by the time the wedding day arrives, the camera feels much less intimidating.
That was exactly the case with Vivian and Michael. By the time I photographed their wedding, we had already spent time together, they already knew what to expect, and there was a level of comfort that helped everything feel natural. Engagement sessions are truly the beginning of the wedding photography experience.
