Best Portrait Session Locations for Engagements and Family Photos Throughout Orlando & Central Florida
Planning a portrait session is one of the most exciting parts of documenting your life and memories, especially when choosing a location that feels meaningful, beautiful, and true to your story. As a photographer who has photographed couples, families, and maternity portraits throughout Orlando and Central Florida for over 17 years, I’ve explored some of the most romantic, scenic, natural, and unique photo locations across Florida.
Whether you are planning engagement photos, maternity portraits, family pictures, anniversary portraits, couples sessions, or children’s portraits, Central Florida offers an incredible variety of locations for every photography style and personality. From natural Florida springs and dreamy gardens to downtown city views, beaches at sunset, luxury resorts, open fields, Spanish moss, historic areas, and theme park-inspired scenery, there truly is a perfect location for every type of session.
One of the biggest questions clients ask when planning their portrait session is:
“How do we choose the right location?”
The truth is that the best portrait session locations are not always simply the prettiest locations. The most meaningful sessions often happen in places that genuinely reflect the people being photographed and the story behind their lives and relationships.
For some couples, that may be the exact location where the proposal happened. For growing families, it may be a park they visit every weekend with their children, a favorite beach vacation spot, a location tied to family traditions, or a place that simply feels special to them. Some people want elegant gardens and romantic sunsets, while others feel more connected to natural springs, downtown city vibes, luxury resorts, open nature trails, colorful murals, or cozy small-town locations.
There is no “one size fits all” portrait session location because every family, couple, and story is completely different.
That is one of the reasons I spend time helping clients choose a location that feels authentic to them rather than simply choosing a random popular photo spot. The right location helps your portraits feel more personal, emotional, natural, and connected to your real story and personality.
Throughout this guide, I’ll break down some of the best portrait session locations throughout Orlando and Central Florida while also answering important planning questions clients frequently ask before choosing a location, including:
- Best time of day for portraits (sunrise versus sunset)
- Whether photography permits are required
- Dog-friendly locations
- Bathroom availability
- Crowd levels and busy seasons
- Accessibility and walking distance
- Seasonal considerations
- Early closing times and park rules
My goal is not only to help clients find beautiful portrait session locations, but also to help them feel confident choosing a location that truly represents their personality, story, and vision for their photos.

Sunrise Versus Sunset at Harry P. Leu Gardens
Leu Gardens is definitely more of a late afternoon or sunset portrait location rather than a sunrise location.

Known for its lush gardens, winding pathways, historic architecture, towering oak trees, and the iconic Singing Tower, Bok Tower Gardens offers a timeless and romantic setting for engagement sessions, maternity portraits, couples photography, and family portraits.
One of my favorite things about Bok Tower Gardens is the incredible variety throughout the property. Between the gardens, the Singing Tower, and the historic El Retiro (formerly known as Pinewood Estate), there are countless beautiful backdrops within a single session.

The best time for portraits at Bok Tower Gardens is either right when the gardens open at 8:00 AM or during the last two hours before closing, typically between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
The ideal timing depends on the season and where sunrise and sunset fall throughout the year.
Sunrise Versus Sunset at Bok Tower Gardens
Bok Tower Gardens photographs beautifully at both sunrise and sunset.
During the summer months, I strongly prefer morning sessions because:
- cooler temperatures

Sunset is the busiest time for portraits, especially during cooler months when the weather is more comfortable. It is very common to see other photographers, families, and couples enjoying the park during golden hour.

Lake Louisa involves a moderate amount of walking, although most portrait locations are relatively accessible from nearby parking areas.
The terrain can be uneven and includes:
- grass

The biggest factor to consider when planning a session at Rollins College is whether school is currently in session.
For the most relaxed experience, I typically recommend:
- Winter Break

There is some walking involved throughout the session, but it is generally considered a very manageable location compared to larger parks and gardens.

The timeless architecture and greenery make Rollins College a strong portrait location regardless of season.
Campus Etiquette and Considerations
One of the reasons Rollins College remains such a wonderful portrait location is because the campus allows visitors and photographers to enjoy its beautiful grounds.
Whenever photographing here, I always encourage clients to be respectful of:
- students
- faculty
- campus events
- buildings and landscaping
Being considerate of the campus helps ensure that photographers and couples can continue enjoying this beautiful Winter Park location for years to come.
Downtown Winter Haven
Winter Haven, FloridaDowntown Winter Haven offers one of the most unique and colorful portrait experiences in Central Florida. One of my favorite things about this location is simply exploring the downtown streets and discovering new murals. The variety of artwork creates dozens of completely different looks within a single portrait session.

The best time for portraits in Downtown Winter Haven is either sunrise or sunset.
Sunrise sessions provide:

There are no public restrooms that I typically rely on during portrait sessions in Downtown Winter Haven.
If needed, you may be able to use facilities inside a local business, restaurant, or coffee shop during your session.
Crowd Levels and Busy Seasons in Downtown Winter Haven
Like most downtown areas, weekends tend to be the busiest.
For the best experience, I usually recommend:
- weekdays
- sunrise sessions
- weekday evenings near sunset
While afternoons can be busier than mornings, the downtown area is generally manageable and does not typically become overcrowded for portraits.
Accessibility and Walking Distance in Downtown Winter Haven
Downtown Winter Haven involves a fair amount of walking since many of the best murals are spread throughout the downtown district.
During your session, expect to:
- walk between mural locations
- explore side streets
- move throughout downtown to find different artistic backdrops

Depending on the season, local events and holiday decorations may also add additional color and character throughout downtown.

As always, the best approach is to be respectful of:
- local businesses
- public spaces
- pedestrians
- traffic
Downtown Winter Haven is perfect for couples and families looking for a creative, colorful, and completely different portrait experience compared to traditional parks or gardens.
Player 1 Video Game Bar
(or non-traditional locations)
Orlando, Florida
Not every engagement session needs to take place in a park, garden, or downtown area. Some of the most meaningful and memorable portraits happen in locations that reflect your actual hobbies, interests, and personalities as a couple.
One of my favorite ways to make an engagement session unique is by choosing a location or activity that genuinely represents who you are together. These sessions often feel more relaxed, more personal, and tell a much richer story than a traditional portrait session.
Some fun ideas include:
- Arcade bars and gaming lounges
- Coffee shops
- Independent bookstores
- Escape rooms
- Axe throwing venues
- Bowling alleys
- Cigar lounges
- Pottery classes
- Painting studios
- Record stores
- Local breweries
- Fishing trips
- Farmers markets
- Cooking classes
- Mini golf
- Ice cream shops
- Antique stores
- Art museums
- Paddleboarding, kayaking, or rock climbing
- Pumpkin patches
- Christmas tree farms
The best engagement session location is often a place that already has meaning to your relationship.
Best Time for Portraits at Non-Traditional Locations
The best time for portraits depends entirely on the location and the type of activity involved.
For indoor locations such as:
- arcades
- bookstores
- coffee shops
- escape rooms
- pottery studios
the timing is usually determined by the business rather than sunrise or sunset.
Many businesses are willing to allow portrait sessions shortly before opening, during slower hours, or at another mutually agreed-upon time.
Do Non-Traditional Locations Require Permission?
In many cases, yes.
Because these locations are often privately owned businesses, I always recommend contacting the owner or manager before planning a portrait session.
Some businesses are happy to accommodate photography sessions, while others may have restrictions, fees, or preferred times for photography.
The exact requirements vary from location to location.
Are These Locations Dog Friendly?
That depends entirely on the individual business or venue.
Most indoor locations are not ideal for dogs unless the business specifically allows pets. If including your dog is important, it's always best to confirm the policy directly with the establishment beforehand.
Bathroom Availability
Most businesses will have restroom facilities available for customers, which can be helpful for quick touch-ups before or during your session.
Crowd Levels and Busy Times
One of the biggest advantages of planning a session directly with a business is the ability to schedule around crowds.
In many cases, portrait sessions can be arranged:
- before opening
- during slower business hours
- on weekdays
- during private event times
This often creates a much more relaxed experience than photographing during normal business hours.
Seasonal Considerations
Many businesses decorate throughout the year, which can add extra personality and character to your portraits.
Depending on the location, you may find:
- holiday decorations
- seasonal menu items
- themed events
- special displays
- unique photo opportunities
These changing details can make every session feel different and help create portraits that reflect a specific season or memory.
Why Choose a Non-Traditional Engagement Session Location?
Some of my favorite engagement sessions have happened in places that couples never considered "photo locations" at all.
Maybe it's:
- the bookstore where you spend every weekend
- your favorite coffee shop
- the arcade where you had your first date
- a pottery class you take together
- an escape room adventure
- a local brewery you love visiting
The goal isn't simply finding a pretty backdrop. It's finding a place that feels like you.
Those personal connections often create the most meaningful photographs and the best stories to look back on years later.

For theme park portraits, early entry is not just preferred—it's one of the biggest factors in creating beautiful images.
Does Universal Orlando Require a Photography Permit?
For standard engagement sessions, family portraits, and couples photography, Universal generally allows casual photography throughout the parks as part of your normal park admission.
Guests are responsible for purchasing their own admission tickets, and all photography must follow current park policies.
One unique thing about Universal is the popularity of what many fans refer to as "guerrilla weddings." These are informal wedding ceremonies, vow renewals, or elopements that take place inside the parks without reserving an official wedding package. Couples often celebrate with portraits throughout the parks afterward, creating a fun and personal experience centered around their favorite fandoms and attractions.
Is Universal Orlando Dog Friendly?
No. Universal Orlando is generally not considered a dog-friendly portrait location for guests bringing pets into the parks.
Service animals are permitted according to Universal's policies.

Universal transforms throughout the year with seasonal events, decorations, and themed experiences.
Depending on the season, you may encounter:
- holiday decorations
- Christmas celebrations
- Halloween experiences
- Mardi Gras festivities
- special event overlays
Many couples enjoy incorporating these seasonal elements into their portraits, while others prefer photographing during quieter times of the year when the parks look more neutral.
Park Hours and Important Considerations
Park hours vary throughout the year, so it is important to check Universal's schedule before your session date.
Because these are active theme parks filled with guests, successful sessions require patience and flexibility. We often wait for crowds to clear, move between locations, and adjust our route based on park activity throughout the day.
Universal portrait sessions are rarely rushed. Most take longer than a traditional one-hour session because the goal is to fully experience the parks while creating photographs that reflect your personality, interests, and favorite fandoms.
For couples who love adventure, movies, gaming, fantasy, superheroes, or theme parks, Universal Orlando can easily become one of the most memorable engagement session locations in all of Florida.

Since the gardens are typically open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, I usually recommend starting sessions around 3:30 PM and photographing through closing time.
The closer we are to sunset, the softer and more flattering the lighting becomes, especially during fall, winter, and early spring when sunset occurs closer to the gardens' closing hours.

However, admission is required for entry. Guests should expect to purchase admission for themselves and the photographer.

Located at the end of the famous Flagler Avenue, this location offers a combination of wide sandy beaches, ocean views, a charming beach-town atmosphere, and easy access to restaurants, shops, and local businesses.
One of the things I love most about this location is how clean and open the beach feels. There is a large stretch of sand between the boardwalk area and the water, creating plenty of room for portraits without feeling crowded. The iconic Flagler Avenue sign, colorful beach-town surroundings, and lifeguard stand also provide fun photo opportunities beyond the shoreline itself.
The overall atmosphere feels relaxed, coastal, and quintessentially Florida.
Best Time of Day for Portraits at Flagler Avenue Beachfront Park
The best time for portraits is either sunrise or sunset.
Sunrise sessions provide:
- Fewer people
- Empty beaches
- Softer lighting
- Beautiful colors over the Atlantic Ocean
One of the biggest advantages of sunrise is the opportunity to photograph the sun rising over the water, often creating beautiful pink, orange, and pastel skies before the sun even appears on the horizon.

Both options are beautiful and simply depend on the style and lighting you prefer.

Your Wedding Venue
(or any Wedding Venue!)
Anywhere!
One of the most overlooked engagement session locations is actually a wedding venue.
Many couples automatically think of parks, beaches, gardens, or downtown areas when planning their engagement session, but some of the most beautiful portrait locations can be found at wedding venues. Whether it's the venue where you're getting married or simply a venue you've always admired, wedding venues often provide elegant architecture, beautiful landscaping, waterfront views, gardens, grand staircases, and other stunning backdrops designed specifically for special events.
An engagement session at your wedding venue is a great way to become familiar with the property before your wedding day, discover your favorite portrait locations, and help your photographer learn the venue before the wedding itself.
What many couples don't realize is that you don't necessarily have to be getting married at a venue to take engagement photos there. Some venues offer portrait session access for a fee, allowing couples to use the property for engagement photos, anniversary portraits, maternity sessions, or personal branding photos even if they are not hosting their wedding there.
I've personally photographed portraits at venues such as Luxmore Grande Estate, The Howey Mansion, and Casa Feliz through photography access programs that allow photographers and clients to reserve time on the property.
If there is a wedding venue you absolutely love, it's always worth contacting the venue and asking if portrait sessions are available.
Best Time of Day for Portraits at a Wedding Venue
The best time for portraits at most wedding venues is typically close to sunset.
Sunset sessions usually provide:
- Softer lighting
- More flattering portraits
- Cooler temperatures
- Beautiful golden-hour conditions
While sunrise can also be beautiful, weekday sunset sessions are often easier to coordinate since venue staff are more likely to be on-site during normal business hours.
Because most wedding venues host weddings and events on weekends, weekday sessions are usually the best option.
Does a Wedding Venue Require a Photography Permit?
If you are getting married at the venue, many wedding venues will allow engagement sessions on the property at no additional charge or as part of your wedding package. If your venue has not mentioned this option, it is always worth asking.
If you are not getting married at the venue, many locations offer photography access through a separate permit fee, portrait session fee, or rental agreement.
Every venue handles this differently, but many beautiful wedding venues throughout Florida offer portrait access even for non-clients.
I always recommend contacting the venue directly to ask about:
- Photography permits
- Portrait session fees
- Venue access policies
- Available dates and times
Is a Wedding Venue Dog Friendly?
Dog policies vary from venue to venue.
Some venues welcome pets for portrait sessions, while others have restrictions based on insurance requirements, property rules, or event schedules.
Always confirm pet policies directly with the venue before bringing your dog.
Bathroom Availability at a Wedding Venue
Most wedding venues provide restroom access, making outfit changes and touch-ups significantly easier than many public parks and outdoor locations.
Crowd Levels and Busy Seasons at a Wedding Venue
One of the biggest advantages of photographing at a wedding venue is privacy.
Unlike public parks, beaches, or downtown locations, wedding venues often provide a much more controlled environment with fewer distractions and significantly fewer people in the background of your photographs.
Most portrait sessions are scheduled on weekdays to avoid conflicts with weddings, private events, and venue rentals.
Accessibility and Walking Distance at a Wedding Venue
Accessibility varies depending on the venue.
Some venues feature:
- Paved walkways
- Gardens
- Indoor spaces
- Short walking distances
Others may include:
- Large properties
- Waterfront areas
- Open fields
- Longer walking routes
Seasonal Considerations at a Wedding Venue
Seasonal décor varies significantly from venue to venue.
Some venues decorate extensively for:
- Christmas
- Holidays
- Seasonal celebrations
Others maintain the same appearance throughout the year.
If seasonal decorations are important to you, ask the venue what the property typically looks like during the season you plan to schedule your session.
Venue Policies and Access Rules
Every venue has its own policies regarding:
- Photography access
- Parking
- Venue hours
- Guest access
- Portrait session permits
Because policies vary widely, I always recommend contacting the venue directly for the most current information.
Why Consider an Engagement Session at a Wedding Venue?
A wedding venue engagement session is one of the easiest ways to create portraits that feel elegant, private, and unique.
Whether it's your actual wedding venue or simply a venue you've always admired, many locations offer portrait session opportunities that most couples never realize are available. If there's a venue you've fallen in love with, it never hurts to ask. You may discover that your dream engagement session location is available for a simple portrait permit fee, even if your wedding is taking place somewhere else.
Not Sure Which Location Is Right For You?
Every couple is different, and the best engagement session locations are often the ones that reflect your personalities, interests, and relationship. Some couples love beaches and waterfront views, while others are drawn to gardens, downtown areas, theme parks, or meaningful places that are part of their story.
Maybe it's the park where you got engaged, your favorite coffee shop, the wedding venue you've fallen in love with, or simply a location that matches the overall look and feel you want for your photos.
If you're not sure which location is the best fit, I'd be happy to help. After photographing couples throughout Central Florida for nearly two decades, I can help you narrow down the options and choose a location that fits your style, comfort level, and vision for your engagement session.
