Disney Cruise Line Wish Wedding Photos – Kelli & Aaqil's DCL Wedding

Sometimes a wedding day turns out completely differently than you planned, and Kelli and Aaqil's Disney Cruise Line wedding aboard the Disney Wish is probably one of the best examples I have ever photographed.

Kelli and Aaqil were originally supposed to get married on Castaway Cay on April 30, 2023. Instead, an unexpected situation with the Disney Wish completely changed their plans. The ship experienced a mechanical issue while in Nassau and had to remain there overnight. By the following morning, the itinerary had changed and the Disney Wish would no longer be visiting Castaway Cay.

That meant Kelli and Aaqil weren't going to Castaway Cay either, and neither was their wedding.

They had approximately 30 guests already aboard the ship, their wedding was happening that day, and suddenly the location they had planned their ceremony around was no longer available. Disney Fairy Tale Weddings moved their ceremony aboard the Disney Wish to The Rose, and Kelli and Aaqil did exactly what you hope you'll be able to do when something completely outside your control happens on your wedding day: they went with it.

What followed was one of the most unique Disney Cruise Line weddings I've photographed and a perfect example of just how many possibilities there are for wedding photography aboard the Disney Wish itself.

An Unexpected Change to Their Disney Cruise Line Wedding

The circumstances surrounding Kelli and Aaqil's DCL wedding were definitely unusual. The Disney Wish experienced an unexpected mechanical issue while in Nassau on April 29, 2023, which delayed the ship's departure. The following day's planned Castaway Cay visit was ultimately canceled, and Kelli and Aaqil woke up on their wedding day knowing their plans were about to look very different.

Because this wedding took place in 2023, I do want to make an important distinction for couples planning a Disney Cruise Line wedding today. Kelli and Aaqil's experience is part of their specific wedding story and isn't meant to represent current Disney Cruise Line or Disney Fairy Tale Weddings policies, packages, ceremony locations, or contingency procedures. Those things can change, so current couples should always verify the latest information directly with Disney.

What their experience does show beautifully is the value of having backup plans and people around you who know how to adapt when something unexpected happens.

Moving Their DCL Wedding Aboard the Disney Wish

With their original ceremony location no longer available, Disney Fairy Tale Weddings moved Kelli and Aaqil's wedding aboard the Disney Wish to The Rose. At the time, we were told theirs would be the first wedding held inside The Rose aboard the Disney Wish.

The Rose is an elegant Beauty and the Beast-inspired lounge, and it gave their ceremony an entirely different atmosphere than what they had originally planned. The darker interior, gold details and intricate backdrop created a beautiful setting for the ceremony while still feeling intimate for their group of approximately 30 guests.

Most importantly, their wedding still happened.

Their guests had a place to gather, the ceremony was set, and Kelli and Aaqil were able to concentrate on actually getting married instead of trying to solve the logistics themselves. Everyone was taken care of, and the wedding continued.

It's a great reminder for anyone considering a Disney Cruise Line wedding that itineraries and locations can sometimes change. When you're planning a wedding at sea, it's worth asking what happens if your original ceremony location becomes unavailable and what contingency options may exist for your particular sailing.

Getting Ready for a Wedding Aboard the Disney Wish

One of my favorite things about Disney Cruise Line wedding photography is that the story doesn't have to begin at the ceremony. The ship itself can become part of the entire wedding day, starting with getting ready.

Kelli got ready aboard the Disney Wish with her mom nearby, and we photographed both the quiet moments of the morning and her wedding details. Her Mickey-inspired jewelry added just enough Disney without overwhelming the rest of her look, and I loved the simplicity of her dress, veil and soft lavender-and-white bouquet.

Aaqil's wedding morning looked completely different and gave us one of my favorite getting-ready experiences I've photographed aboard a DCL ship.

A Groom's Wedding Morning at Hook's Barbery

Aaqil headed to Hook's Barbery aboard the Disney Wish before the ceremony to have his hair styled by one of the Disney cast members. They created this incredibly cool Viking-inspired side braid that worked perfectly with his long hair and gave him a look that felt completely like him.

Hook's Barbery is the men's grooming space aboard the Disney Wish, inspired by Captain Hook's personal quarters aboard the Jolly Roger. The darker wood, vintage barbershop details and moody atmosphere also happen to photograph beautifully.

Instead of simply photographing Aaqil getting dressed in his stateroom, we were able to incorporate another unique part of the Disney Wish into their wedding story. These are the little details I love about photographing DCL weddings. Experiences you're already planning aboard the ship can become part of your wedding gallery rather than photography feeling like a completely separate part of the day.

Kelli and Aaqil's Wedding Ceremony at The Rose

When it was time for the ceremony, Kelli and Aaqil's family and friends gathered inside The Rose. After everything that had changed in less than 24 hours, there was something especially wonderful about seeing the two of them standing together and finally getting married.

They were incredibly laid-back throughout the entire experience. There wasn't a feeling that the wedding had somehow been ruined because it wasn't happening where they originally planned. Their family and friends were there, they were together, and they were getting married aboard the Disney Wish.

That attitude carried through the entire celebration.

They were still able to enjoy the wedding traditions that mattered to them, including their first dance, Aaqil's dance with his mom, a few speeches, a champagne toast and cake cutting. Afterward, they had plenty of time to mingle with their guests and simply enjoy being together.

It felt relaxed and personal, which suited Kelli and Aaqil perfectly.

Disney Wish Wedding Photography on an Unexpected Sea Day

The change in itinerary created another photography challenge that most people probably wouldn't immediately think about.

Everyone was still on the ship.

Normally, when a Disney Cruise Line ship is in port, many guests leave the ship to explore the destination. Because the Disney Wish wasn't visiting Castaway Cay that day, everyone who would normally have been spending the day on the island was now aboard the ship.

Disney Cruise Line also had to create additional activities and entertainment for guests because of the unexpected change. That meant spaces throughout the Disney Wish that might normally have been relatively quiet during a port day were suddenly much busier.

So we adjusted.

We worked around other guests, changed angles when we needed to, watched for openings and concentrated on the Disney Wish locations that Kelli and Aaqil really wanted to include in their photographs. If a location wasn't working at that moment, we moved on and came back or found something else.

You would never know from their finished wedding gallery how much activity was happening around us.

This is also one of the reasons experience photographing Disney Cruise Line weddings matters. A cruise ship isn't a private wedding venue. You don't control who is walking through a hallway, whether a lounge is hosting an activity, or how busy a particular part of the ship will be. Sometimes we wait. Sometimes we move. Sometimes the entire plan changes.

The goal stays exactly the same: create beautiful photographs that feel like the two of you and tell the story of where you got married.

Our Favorite Disney Wish Wedding Photo Locations

Even on an unusually busy day, the Disney Wish gave us so much variety for Kelli and Aaqil's wedding portraits. Rather than trying to photograph absolutely everywhere, we concentrated on locations they loved and spaces that gave their gallery several completely different looks.

That's one of the biggest advantages of having wedding photography aboard the Disney Wish. You can create an entire gallery without ever leaving the ship.

The Disney Wish Grand Hall

The Grand Hall is one of the most recognizable spaces aboard the Disney Wish, so naturally we wanted to incorporate it into their wedding photographs.

The sweeping staircase, Cinderella-inspired design and dramatic chandelier gave us that unmistakable Disney Cruise Line setting while still allowing the photographs to feel like wedding portraits first. We photographed Kelli and Aaqil together around the staircase and also created portraits of Kelli alone. Her simple gown and long veil looked incredible surrounded by all of the architectural detail.

This is exactly the balance I look for when photographing a Disney wedding. I want you to immediately recognize where the photograph was created without having the location overpower the couple.

The Cinderella Statue

We also made sure to photograph Kelli and Aaqil near the Cinderella statue in the Grand Hall. It was one of their favorite spots aboard the Disney Wish, and I always think it's more important to prioritize locations that actually mean something to the couple than to run around the ship trying to complete a generic list of photo locations.

One of my favorite photographs from this part of the day is Aaqil kneeling to adjust Kelli's shoe near Cinderella. It's playful and completely them while still being immediately recognizable as a Disney Wish wedding photograph.

Walt Disney Theatre

The Walt Disney Theatre area gave us another completely different look. The illuminated theater sign and ornate entrance created a darker, more dramatic backdrop than the bright Grand Hall.

That's one of the things I love most about Disney Wish wedding photography. Within a relatively small area of the ship, we can move from bright Cinderella-inspired architecture to theatrical backgrounds, ocean views, exterior decks and smaller tucked-away spaces.

You don't need dozens of locations to create variety. You need the right locations, good light and a willingness to work with what the ship gives us that day.

Portholes and Quieter Corners of the Disney Wish

Some of my favorite Disney Cruise Line wedding photographs are often created in places that don't look particularly dramatic until you put a bride or couple into them.

A large porthole overlooking the ocean became the perfect location for a bridal portrait of Kelli. We also used hallways, architectural details and smaller spaces around the Disney Wish to create portraits of the two of them away from some of the more recognizable Disney backgrounds.

I love having both in a DCL wedding gallery.

I want couples to have photographs that clearly tell the story of getting married aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship, but I also want images that simply feel timeless and beautiful even if you couldn't immediately identify where they were taken.

Fireworks Wedding Photos Aboard the Disney Wish

Thankfully, we were also able to photograph Kelli and Aaqil with fireworks later during their Disney Cruise Line sailing.

The original entertainment schedule had been affected by the unexpected situation during the cruise, but the fireworks were rescheduled and we had another opportunity to photograph them. We headed outside with Kelli and Aaqil and created nighttime portraits with the fireworks behind them.

They ended up being some of my favorite photographs from their entire Disney Wish wedding experience.

Fireworks portraits aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship are never something I want couples to consider guaranteed. Weather, entertainment schedules, itinerary changes and ship operations can all affect what happens during a particular DCL sailing.

But when everything lines up, they can be an incredible way to finish a Disney Cruise wedding gallery.

Why Have a Wedding Aboard the Disney Wish?

Kelli and Aaqil's wedding is a particularly good example of something couples sometimes overlook when considering a Disney Cruise Line wedding: the ship itself can be an incredible wedding destination.

Disney's island destinations are understandably a huge part of the appeal of a Disney Cruise, but your wedding photography doesn't have to depend entirely on leaving the ship. The Disney Wish has elegant lounges, the Grand Hall, sweeping staircases, theatrical spaces, ocean views, exterior decks, unique experiences like Hook's Barbery and dozens of smaller architectural details that can become part of your wedding story.

For couples who already love Disney Cruise Line, there's also something really special about celebrating with your guests beyond a traditional single-day wedding. Everyone is traveling together, sharing meals and experiences, and spending time together throughout the sailing.

And as Kelli and Aaqil unexpectedly demonstrated, you can create an incredibly varied Disney Cruise Line wedding gallery entirely aboard the Disney Wish.

What Happens If Your Disney Cruise Line Wedding Location Changes?

This is probably the biggest planning lesson from Kelli and Aaqil's wedding.

Things can change when you're getting married at sea. Weather can change. Ports can change. Ship schedules can change. Something completely unexpected can happen that nobody involved in the wedding could have predicted.

In Kelli and Aaqil's case, the Disney Wish didn't make its planned Castaway Cay visit and their entire wedding location changed. Disney Fairy Tale Weddings moved their ceremony aboard the ship to The Rose, their guests were accommodated, and the wedding continued.

That doesn't mean every future Disney Cruise Line wedding will be handled exactly the same way. Policies, backup locations and available options can change, so current couples should always discuss contingency plans directly with Disney Fairy Tale Weddings.

But Kelli and Aaqil's experience is a pretty incredible real-world example of why those backup plans matter.

Then there's the part you actually can control: choosing vendors you trust and being willing to adapt if something changes.

Kelli and Aaqil were exceptionally good at that. They didn't spend their wedding day mourning the version of the day they thought they were going to have. They embraced the one that was actually happening.

How to Book a Disney Cruise Line Wedding

Disney Cruise weddings are coordinated through Disney Fairy Tale Weddings. Ships, ceremony locations, packages, guest options and availability can change, so if you're considering getting married aboard the Disney Wish or another DCL ship, I recommend starting directly with Disney Fairy Tale Weddings for the most current information.

Once you know which sailing and wedding experience you're considering, that's also a good time to start thinking about photography. Your ceremony is only one piece of your wedding story. Getting ready, portraits throughout the Disney Wish, time with your guests, reception traditions and additional photography opportunities during the sailing can all become part of your final gallery.

If you'd like to see a completely different Disney Cruise Line wedding experience, take a look at Micaela and Dominick's Disney Dream wedding on Castaway Cay. Their wedding shows the island side of DCL wedding photography, while Kelli and Aaqil's wedding is one of my favorite examples of just how much we can create aboard the ship itself.

Disney Cruise Line Wedding Photography

I've photographed weddings aboard multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, including the Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, along with Disney weddings on land. DCL weddings are some of my favorite celebrations to photograph because every sailing and every couple gives us something completely different.

My approach combines photojournalistic storytelling with guided portraiture. I want to document what actually happens, especially the moments you couldn't possibly have planned, while also making sure we take advantage of the incredible environments around us.

That's especially important on a cruise ship. I go into a Disney Cruise Line wedding knowing what we'd love to accomplish, but I'm also prepared for the plan to change. Kelli and Aaqil's wedding required more flexibility than most, and that's exactly why I love their gallery so much.

Their photographs aren't about everything that went wrong with their original plan. They're about what happened instead.

They got married aboard the Disney Wish. They celebrated with approximately 30 of their favorite people. Aaqil got a Viking-inspired braid at Hook's Barbery. They danced, toasted, cut their wedding cake, explored the ship together and eventually stood outside with fireworks exploding behind them.

Not a bad Plan B.
