Planning a portrait session is one of the most exciting parts of documenting your life and memories, especially when choosing a location that feels meaningful, beautiful, and true to your story. As a photographer who has photographed couples, families, and maternity portraits throughout Orlando and Central Florida for over 17 years, I’ve explored some of the most romantic, scenic, natural, and unique photo locations across Florida.
Whether you are planning engagement photos, maternity portraits, family pictures, anniversary portraits, couples sessions, or children’s portraits, Central Florida offers an incredible variety of locations for every photography style and personality. From natural Florida springs and dreamy gardens to downtown city views, beaches at sunset, luxury resorts, open fields, Spanish moss, historic areas, and theme park-inspired scenery, there truly is a perfect location for every type of session.
One of the biggest questions clients ask when planning their portrait session is:
“How do we choose the right location?”
The truth is that the best portrait session locations are not always simply the prettiest locations. The most meaningful sessions often happen in places that genuinely reflect the people being photographed and the story behind their lives and relationships.
For some couples, that may be the exact location where the proposal happened. For growing families, it may be a park they visit every weekend with their children, a favorite beach vacation spot, a location tied to family traditions, or a place that simply feels special to them. Some people want elegant gardens and romantic sunsets, while others feel more connected to natural springs, downtown city vibes, luxury resorts, open nature trails, colorful murals, or cozy small-town locations.
There is no “one size fits all” portrait session location because every family, couple, and story is completely different.
That is one of the reasons I spend time helping clients choose a location that feels authentic to them rather than simply choosing a random popular photo spot. The right location helps your portraits feel more personal, emotional, natural, and connected to your real story and personality.
Throughout this guide, I’ll break down some of the best portrait session locations throughout Orlando and Central Florida while also answering important planning questions clients frequently ask before choosing a location, including:
My goal is not only to help clients find beautiful portrait session locations, but also to help them feel confident choosing a location that truly represents their personality, story, and vision for their photos.
Kelly Park Rock Springs is easily one of the most unique and beautiful portrait session locations in all of Central Florida. Known for its crystal-clear spring water, natural Florida scenery, tropical colors, large trees, and peaceful river-like setting, Kelly Park has become one of the most popular locations for engagement sessions, maternity portraits, couples sessions, and family portraits throughout the Orlando area.
One of the reasons couples and families love Kelly Park Rock Springs is because it feels completely different from typical Florida portrait locations. Instead of beaches or gardens, the spring offers a natural and adventurous atmosphere with clear blue-green water, beautiful rock formations, lush greenery, and a more organic Florida look that photographs beautifully year-round.
One of the most iconic photo spots at Kelly Park is the famous rock area that is often seen in engagement and portrait photos online. The rock creates an incredibly scenic backdrop surrounded by the flowing spring water and natural greenery. While this is definitely one of the main portrait locations inside the park, there are also several quieter and equally beautiful areas throughout Kelly Park that work wonderfully for portraits depending on lighting, crowd levels, and the overall vibe you want for your session.
The absolute best time for portraits at Kelly Park Rock Springs is weekday sunrise sessions, especially right when the park opens around 8:00 AM. I typically recommend arriving around 7:30 AM so that you can already be waiting in line before the gates open, especially during busier times of the year.
Morning light at Kelly Park is much softer, more flattering, and significantly less crowded than later in the day. Sunrise sessions also help avoid harsh overhead sunlight, busy tubing crowds, and large groups of visitors entering the spring throughout the afternoon.
Kelly Park Rock Springs is definitely more of a sunrise location rather than a sunset location. Because of the surrounding trees and the way the light filters through the spring area, the soft early morning light creates the most beautiful and cleanest look for portraits.
By late afternoon, the park typically becomes much busier and the lighting can become harsher and more difficult to work with, especially during warmer months and school breaks.
At this time, Kelly Park Rock Springs does not typically require a formal photography permit for standard portrait sessions. However, entrance fees are required to enter the park. The entrance fee is usually around a few dollars per person or per vehicle depending on the current park pricing and Orange County regulations.
Because park rules and pricing can occasionally change, I always recommend checking the official Orange County Parks information before your session date.
While Kelly Park is a public park, I personally do not commonly see dogs in the main spring swimming and portrait areas. Because rules and pet restrictions can change over time, I always recommend double-checking the current Orange County park policies if bringing a dog is important for your session.
Kelly Park does have public bathroom facilities available near the main entrance and recreational areas, which can be very helpful for portrait sessions, outfit adjustments, families with children, or maternity sessions.
One of the biggest factors when planning a portrait session at Kelly Park is crowd levels. The park becomes extremely busy during:
Because of this, I almost always recommend avoiding weekends whenever possible for portrait sessions.
Some of the best times of year for Kelly Park portraits are:
September is honestly one of the best months for Kelly Park sessions because the water is still warm, the scenery remains beautiful, and most children have already returned to school, making weekday mornings significantly less crowded.
Even though certain months are easier than others, beautiful sessions can still happen year-round with proper planning and timing.
Kelly Park does involve some walking depending on which portrait locations we decide to use throughout the park. The pathways are mostly natural terrain, grass, sand, rocks, and uneven surfaces near the water areas, so comfortable footwear is highly recommended when walking between locations.
For maternity sessions or families with small children, we typically plan sessions carefully to minimize unnecessary walking while still reaching the best photo areas.
Florida weather and seasonal crowd levels can greatly affect the overall experience at Kelly Park. Summer months bring larger crowds and hotter temperatures, while spring and early fall often provide the best combination of comfortable weather, beautiful lighting, and lower crowd levels.
Because Kelly Park is a natural spring location, water levels, greenery, and lighting can slightly vary throughout the year, which helps make every session feel unique.
Kelly Park does have operating hours and park regulations that guests must follow. One of the most important rules to remember is that glass items are not permitted inside the park. Because of this, champagne bottles or anything involving glass props are not recommended for portrait sessions at Kelly Park.
It is also extremely important to respect the natural environment, wildlife, and spring areas throughout the park to help preserve the beauty of the location for future visitors.
Because park hours and rules can occasionally change, I always recommend checking the latest Orange County Parks guidelines prior to your portrait session date.
